1st XV in Bank Holiday Cup Final Action at Esher

Guildfordians 1st XV will face Mitcham & Carshalton in the final of the Surrey Rugby Chairman’s Bowl on Monday 2nd May, this coming bank holiday weekend.

The game will take place at Esher RFC with kick off set for 4:30pm. The team would be thrilled to see as many supporters as possible down, on what promises to be a fantastic day for the seniors section.

The game will round off the 2021/22 season for the club’s senior section following the 1st XV’s 4th place finish in the Surrey 3 league, with the cup representing a chance to win the side’s first silverware since 2014.

This will be the club’s first meeting since 2017 with opposition Mitcham & Carshalton, who come to the final off the back of a narrow victory over league rivals Old Paulines.

The game will also represent the final games in their current roles for Head Coach Charlie Maguire and 1st XV Captain Tom Halsey, who will each step down at the end of this season.

We hope that you can come and support us.

We are a vibrant club in the heart of Guildford and we encourage you to join us. If seniors’ men’s rugby is your aim, we are the club for you. We play competitive rugby with a highly social spirit.

The club runs a 1st and 2nd XV in the Surrey leagues as part of a single squad. Our primary focus has always been to enjoy our rugby in a social environment whilst always trying to improve where we can. Training once a week is unlikely to earn any of us a call up to the Lions next summer, but we are fortunate to benefit from having a group of coaches who work to make sure that players of every experience level, from complete beginners to grizzled veterans, benefit and enjoy each session.

For those players interested in improving their fitness, the club also runs a strength and conditioning sessions.

Along with the rest of the country, our season was cut short by the lockdown measures. But the squad have kept themselves involved through a series of poorly administered quizzes, rugby ‘watch-alongs’ and sharing individual fitness regimes. Although this spring and summer have represented a novel set of challenges for the club, with more undoubtedly yet to come, the seniors feel like they’re in a position to make the most of the extended break and revel in the strong social environment that makes the club such a good place to be.

From 7th September our never-ending preseason shifts locations from Stoke Park to George Abbot school, training still starts at 7pm on Tuesdays.
