News | Rugby Taster Session at the RGS Prep school

On Saturday 12th September, six coaches from Guildfordians held an inaugural rugby taster session at RGS Prep School for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.

The aim was to give the children a taste of what a rugby session at Guildfordians is all about, while also beginning to re-establish links with our shared history ahead of the club’s centenary in 2031.

For those who may not be aware, Guildfordians was formed in 1931 by a group of former RGS students, initially as Old Guildfordians, before evolving over the years into the club we know today as Guildfordians. We still share the same crest as RGS to this day – something put to great effect during the introduction by our Boys’ Chair, Danny, who was able to point to the crest proudly displayed on his shirt!

We had 13 fantastic children attend the session, all of whom showed plenty of enthusiasm and really got stuck in. It was great to see them enjoying themselves and getting a taste of rugby, and some have since gone on to sign up for the Minis section. That is a fantastic reflection of the success of the session and, in particular, the coaches who gave up their time to support the event.

On that point, a huge thank you to Danny, Ed, Ben, Rosey and Paddy for getting up extra early, giving up part of their Saturday morning and, most importantly, being so engaging and encouraging with the children. Their enthusiasm made the session the success it was.
