Written : Friday 3rd Oct 25The Cranfordians Women (combined Guildfordians and Cranleigh) took on Eastbourne on 21st September in the first league match of the season. Having had a decent first season in the league last year, we were really looking forward to get the new season going.
We had a number of new players included, including some playing their first ever game of contact rugby.
Eastbourne came out strong in defense and made a number of big hits, but the patience and skill level of the Cranfordians ensured that we kept the scoreboard ticking over. Our defensive pressure was much improved, which meant Eastbourne had little success in attack.
Even though we suffered a few injury setbacks in key positions, it did not halt our progress. Several players ended up playing out of position and covering positions they have never played before.
We ran in 10 tries to 1 to end up with a convincing win by 60 points to 5. It was a game played in great spirit which everyone enjoyed. and an excellent way to start our league campaign.
