Guildfordians News | Quins Cup! U15s 26 vs Haslemere 5

Scrum down

Written : Thursday 30th Jan 25
In atrocious conditions, Guildfordians U15s continued their winning streak in the Quins Cup with a bonus point win over Haslemere at Stoke Park on Sunday. Haslemere play in the League above Guildfordians so this should have been a tough test, but the home team never let Haslemere in.

Playing downhill in the 1st half, Haslemere started strongly with a runaway try that, due to the wind, remained unconverted. This would be the only time the visitors breached the Guildfordians line and from that point, the lads never looked back. Alex C, Ruben K & Devon S ensured the midfield was a stronghold throughout the game with their fierce tackling against some strong Haslemere runners.

Galloping up the wing, Charlie W went over for a try in the corner, but the wind again played its part, and the ball hung in the air short of the posts for the conversion and the score stayed at 5 apiece. With the weather deteriorating, the backs took their chances and some beautiful handling down the line resulted in a try for George V that he duly converted in front of the sticks and the home team lead 12-5 at half time.

With the wind and rain literally behind them and going downhill in the 2nd half, the Guildfordians forwards decided to take charge. But rather than keep things tight in the scrum, forwards captain Kubilay L decided a runaway try from half way was his preferred way of staying warm and he made the conversion easy for George V taking the score to 19-5.

Not happy with the forwards taking all the glory, the backs again played their part and Simon Y took the result beyond any doubt with a bonus point try sprinting from half way to score under the posts. The reliable boot of George V took the final score to 26-5. Hoping for some more favourable weather, the U15s look forward to a stiffer test against Chobham at Fowler’s Wells in 2 week’s time.

Huge thanks must also go to the parent’s and coaches from both sides who braved the elements on the touchline and supported the teams in the microclimate only Stoke Park can provide.

Regards,
Dani Holdsworth
