Saturday 7th Oct 23
On Saturday 23rd September, “Mutts & Mongrels” Walking Rugby returned to Stoke Park.
Following a successful pilot last year with just a handful of clubs, Guildfordians Walking Rugby hosted a bigger event this year with the added feature of a Referee Development Workshop before the games, sponsored by Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
Players and referees from 9 different clubs took part in the day and Guildfordians were especially thrilled to welcome The Chelsea Pensioners' Scarlet Warriors.
The whole day was a great success, with the workshop attendees able to put their newly learned skills into action during the games. Teams were selected at random from the pool of players and each team played four matches of two seven minute halves with a bonus last game of the Scarlet Warriors against Barbarians. The all-inclusive concept of playing in and against teams made up of players from multiple clubs once again proved popular and encouraged greater social interaction with many new friendships being formed. The social aspect of playing a team sport is equally as important and everyone enjoyed a wonderful buffet and drinks in the clubhouse after the games.
Brian got in touch the day after the event:
Thanks to all of you at Guildfordians Walking Rugby, from a bunch of stiffer than they can ever remember Chelsea Pensioners, who had a fabulous introduction to the world of walking rugby. It was just the baptism of fire the Scarlet Warriors needed, they are buzzing with it.
A return visit by Guildfordians to The Royal Hospital is now in the planning.
Walking Rugby is open to all regardless of age, race, gender or ability. Many players have never played rugby before, others are hardened pros. All are welcome; please join us at Guildfordians RFC, Stoke Park, at 12:15 on Sundays or 7:15pm on Tuesdays at Charterhouse Club, Godalming. For further details please visit
