It is a great honour and privilege to be asked to be Chairman of Guilfordians RFC. Following from the sterling work that Alison did, it also is daunting. It would of course be my infinite preference, and I'm sure the preference of everyone in the Club, that Alison was with us to continue in the role and to see the results of her dedicated hard work on behalf of the Club come to fruition - we are indebted to her.
By way of introduction to those that do not know me, I have been involved in the Club for about 20 years - my sons went through the minis and youth sections, and I have played in the men's team and now walking rugby. For a number of years I was Festival Organiser and Disciplinary Officer.
Post Covid, like so many other rugby clubs, the Men's section is working towards getting numbers back to pre-Covid levels. It may take a little time, but I am confident it will bounce back. If you are or know anybody who would like to put their rugby boots on again, or perhaps put rugby boots on for the first time, they would be very welcome - as I can testify, the Men's section is very welcoming to all.
Other sections of the club are thriving, and I'm really excited to see Women's rugby starting at the club this autumn - the calibre of players we have in our Women's and Touch teams is truly outstanding with some international players among them. Whatever section of the club you are most affiliated to, I would urge you to get down to Stoke Park and support the Men's, Women's and Touch teams when playing at home - it is much appreciated by them, and you'll get to enjoy some great rugby. On some Saturdays we will be arranging lunches in the club house before home team games - please come along, enjoy some good food and the company of the Guildfordians community before kick-off. The first of these will be on Saturday 2 September - details elsewhere in this newsletter.
As with any volunteer club, the club would not function without the input of its many volunteers. More volunteers always are needed, however. If you are not already doing something, I would urge you please to put up your hand to help in some way small or large. It is undoubtedly the case that the more one puts in, the more one gets out.
Guildfordians is a very special and supportive club which is to be cherished. I will do all that I can to see the club flourish while maintaining that ethos.
