Saturday 9th Apr 22Despite the efforts of accidents on the M25 & multiple councils doing their utmost to spend their roadworks budgets before year-end, 12 of us made it safely to the Old Deer Park & met 10 players from Richmond (who are recent converts to walking rugby). After a brief warmup, it became clear that Richmond have been playing different rules (including 6 tackles) so we decided to play 2 sessions to their version & 2 sessions to ours. It quickly became apparent that they play with the same spirit as Guildfordians so everyone enjoyed the games. After the 4 sessions, we then played a game with mixed squads - players fitted seamlessly together.
After the games, we graced the sports bar & 6 of us stayed on to watch the 1st XV match, courtesy of free tickets from our hosts. It was enjoyable though a bit chilly - unfortunately our hosts were beaten by a well-drilled Coventry team.
Our thanks to Vaughan for arranging, Liam for being press ganged into reffing & all at Richmond for making us welcome. Also a shout-out to our own “Swearbox” for turning out - great to see him back at WR - let’s hope we see more of him through the summer.
Thanks to all for turning out - it was great to have a squad which included so many better halves !
