Walking Rugby v Topsham - Friday 15th October 2021
Wednesday 27th Oct 21On Friday 15th October, the newest section of Guildfordians Rugby Club with the oldest members welcomed Topsham RFC (on tour from Devon) for an evening fixture. Guildfordians fielded two teams, Topsham one team and a fourth consisted of members from both clubs to make a Baa-Baas team.
We have history with Topsham having lost to them in the final of the Vintage Games in Bath in 2019, so it was good to welcome and become reacquainted with old friends and foes.
All teams played each other and in the spirit of
TREDS (Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship) no scores were kept but all games were keenly contested and enjoyed.
After the games we retreated to Guildfordians clubhouse for something to eat and drink, and in true fashion, we talked about the game and recounted stories of deeds long forgotten.
For those who have not come across walking rugby, it is a non contact game played in mixed gender teams. It is a great cardio workout and caters for players of all speeds from slow and steady to as fast as you can walk keeping one foot on the ground at all times. It is open to adults of all ages, genders and abilities and no previous experience of rugby is necessary. Guildfordians current squad includes members from their mid-20s to mid-70s.
Guildfordians are always on the lookout for new members and we are especially keen to increase the number of females in our squad. Training sessions are held twice a week, Sundays at 12:15 outside the clubhouse on Stoke Park and Tuesday evenings at 7:30pm at Charterhouse Club in Godalming.
