Kingswood Walking Rugby Festival 28th August 2021
Sunday 29th Aug 2110 players from Guildfordians Walking Rugby squad set off for Bristol on Saturday morning to take part in Kingswood RFC’s walking rugby festival.
We nearly lost Carl before the first game as he tried to single-handedly deliver our ‘best in show’ gazebo to the eagerly awaiting gang then Brian and Shaun nearly passed their initiation test as we watched them trying to erect it!
With 18 teams taking part, some from as far afield as Wales and Devon, it was a chance to get reacquainted with some old friends and also make some new ones. Each team played 6 games, there was no overall tournament winner and our squad did themselves proud with 5 wins (4-1 against Chippenham, 2-1 against Crickhowell, 8-2 against Bristol Pioneers, 5-3 against Newent, 4-0 against Crediton) and a 4-4 draw with Salisbury. With 27 tries scored over the day, only Cardiff Barbarians topped us with 28.
There were some interesting discrepancies between the referees, especially with regard to the difference between fast walking and running. Several of us will have to hone our skills to satisfy all points of view going forwards but it didn’t stop us attacking and scoring well. Combined with great defence and ever improving communication, much fun was had by all.
If you know anyone who would like to give walking rugby a go, our training sessions from September will be on Sundays at 12:15 outside the clubhouse on Stoke Park and Tuesday evenings at 7:30pm (from 14/9) at Charterhouse Club in Godalming.
